Fitbit Co-Founders Launch Luffu Link, a Smart LTE Health Band
On Tuesday, Luffu, a startup founded by Fitbit’s former executives James Park and Eric Friedman, unveiled its latest product: the Luffu Link, an LTE-enabled health and safety wristband designed to monitor both physical and mental well-being. The device integrates continuous health tracking, voice recording, location awareness, and emergency assistance features into a single wearable, even when a smartphone is not nearby. This development marks a significant step in enhancing family health management technology.
Availability, Design, and Colors
The Luffu Link, priced at $250, is currently available for pre-order and is scheduled to begin shipping in early 2027. The device is offered in three elegant color options: halo gold, onyx black, and sterling blue, appealing to users seeking both functionality and style.
Advancing Family Care with Smart Technology
The launch of Luffu Link aligns with the startup’s goal to develop an intelligent family care ecosystem. It complements the Luffu health-monitoring app, introduced earlier this year, which employs artificial intelligence to collect and organize family health data, recognize daily patterns, and alert users to significant changes. This combination aims to help families stay informed and proactive about their loved ones’ health and safety.

Origins and Mission of Luffu
Founded through their personal experiences caring for family members and aging parents, Park and Friedman created Luffu to provide families with clearer insights into their loved ones’ health without the need for constant check-ins or invasive monitoring. Their aim is to balance safety with privacy, offering a discreet way to stay informed.
“When you become a family caregiver or the CEO of the family, these individuals spend an enormous amount of time managing health and safety,” Park explained in an interview with TechCrunch. “Research indicates that caregivers dedicate over 27 hours weekly on average, which is an overwhelming commitment. Technology can significantly ease this burden, but existing tools are often fragmented,” he added.
Features and Functionality of Luffu Link
Users can activate the device’s voice-activated button to record updates on medications, symptoms, meals, mood, reminders, and more. The Luffu app then organizes these inputs within the family’s health context. The target market includes family caregivers, independent seniors, and health-conscious adults aiming to monitor their well-being proactively.
The wearable continuously gathers vital health metrics such as activity levels, sleep quality, resting heart rate, calories burned, heart rate variability (HRV), and breathing rate. These data points help identify daily routines, monitor changes over time, and generate personalized insights or alerts.

“Changes in sleep patterns or reactions to medication can be detected through this data,” Friedman noted. “The goal isn’t just to provide families with graphs and dashboards—although I designed many of those at Fitbit—but to answer key questions like ‘What has changed? Does it matter? Does someone need to intervene?’ This allows families to live their lives without feeling constantly watched.”
Emergency and Location Features
The device’s built-in GPS enables trusted contacts to be informed of the wearer’s location, including recent movements and whether they enter or exit designated zones. A quick double press allows the user to check in with family members without making a call or sending a message. Additionally, LTE connectivity enables the wearer to send emergency help requests independently of a phone, with the LTE service included in the device—no separate carrier plan required.
For instance, if a wearer presses the button and states, “I fell and hurt my wrist. Can someone come get me?” the Link will transmit the voice message along with location, battery status, heart rate, and recent activity data to trusted contacts, facilitating quick assistance in emergencies.
Design Philosophy and Future Developments
Unlike conventional health wearables focused solely on fitness, Luffu Link emphasizes everyday health and family connectivity. The device is intentionally designed without a screen, aiming to serve as a discreet, supportive presence rather than a typical gadget. Park explained, “While many new wearables are screenless, ours is purposefully so. We want it to operate quietly in the background, resembling jewelry more than a traditional device, avoiding the look of bulky or generic health trackers.”
The startup has also hinted at developing a home device to extend Luffu’s functionality into the household, further advancing their integrated family care system.
Although currently available for pre-order at a discounted rate, the anticipated retail price for Luffu Link is $300.

Luffu, a new startup from Fitbit’s co-founders James Park and Eric Friedman, on Tuesday launched Luffu Link, an LTE-enabled health and safety band designed to monitor the wearer’s overall health, both physical and mental. The wearable combines all-day health sensing, voice logging, location awareness, and the ability to get help from trusted contacts into a single device, even when no phone is nearby.
The currently $250 device is available for preorder and is expected to ship in early 2027. It comes in three colors: halo gold, onyx black, and sterling blue.
Luffu Link represents the next step in the startup’s mission to develop an intelligent family care system, as it complements the Luffu health-monitoring app, launched earlier this year. The app uses AI in the background to gather and organize family information, learn day-to-day patterns, and flag notable changes so families can stay aligned and address potential well-being issues.

Luffu was born out of Park and Friedman’s own experiences caring for their families and aging parents. They built Luffu to give families a clearer picture of a loved one’s health without constant check-ins or making them feel monitored.
“When you become a family caregiver, or the CEO of the family, these people are spending an enormous amount of time doing it,” Park said in an interview with TechCrunch. “Research shows over 27 hours a week on average, which is a crazy amount of time…I think technology can play a big role in helping reduce this load, but as we found out, the tools to help them are pretty fragmented,” he said.
Link users can press a button to capture information in the moment by voice, like updates about medications, symptoms, meals, mood, reminders, and more. The Luffu app then organizes that information and incorporates it into the family’s broader context. The company sees its market as including family caregivers, independent older adults, and health- and safety-conscious adults who want to stay on top of their health.
The wearable also continuously collects standard health and wellness data, such as activity, sleep, resting heart rate, calories burned, heart-rate variability (HRV), and breathing rate to identify daily patterns, track changes over time, and provide personalized insights or alerts.

“Link does a lot of what a typical health tracker would do, but…it’s not just about tracking,” Park said. “It’s about what Luffu does with that data. It’s looking for patterns, so maybe your activity has been unusually low,” he continues.

“Perhaps your sleep schedule has changed, or a medication has influenced your patterns,” Friedman added. “Our goal isn’t just to generate graphs for families—though I designed many of those at Fitbit—but to help answer vital questions like ‘What changed? Does it matter? Does someone need to intervene?’ This way, families can continue their daily lives without feeling under constant surveillance.”
Location Tracking and Emergency Assistance
The device’s integrated GPS allows trusted contacts to be updated on the wearer’s location, including recent movements and whether they are entering or leaving designated zones. A double press of a button enables quick check-ins without calls or texts. The LTE feature allows users to send emergency assistance requests independently, with the service included at no extra carrier cost.
For example, a user can say, “I fell and hurt my wrist. Can someone come get me?” and the device will transmit the voice message along with location, battery level, heart rate, and recent activity data to contacts, facilitating rapid response in emergencies.
Design Philosophy and Future Plans
Unlike traditional fitness wearables with screens, Luffu Link is intentionally designed to be discreet and jewelry-like. Park emphasized, “While many wearables now are screenless, ours is purposefully so. We want this to operate quietly in the background as a guardian, not as a typical health device. Its aesthetic draws from jewelry, avoiding the look of bulky or generic trackers.”
The company also announced ongoing development of a home device aimed at extending Luffu’s capabilities into the household environment, further advancing its integrated family health system.
Although available for pre-order at a discounted price, the retail price is expected to be around $300.
