Apple is currently developing a new screen-less fitness tracker aimed at competing with Whoop, the fitness technology company valued at over $10 billion. This initiative is part of Apple’s exploratory research into new health device formats, with prototypes already in development, according to recent reports.

Bloomberg reports that Apple is conducting a “technology investigation” to determine whether it will fully develop and launch this new product. Several prototypes have been created as part of this exploratory process.

The device is described as “a thin fabric band with a sensor-equipped computing module” and is expected to be released no earlier than 2028, Bloomberg reports.

Although Apple currently offers a fitness tracking feature through its Apple Watch, which monitors workouts, heart rate, sleep, and other metrics, the new device’s form factor resembles that of Whoop’s simple fitness bands. Whoop claims these bands can track a variety of health metrics effectively.

This news comes at a time of transition for Apple. In August, Tim Cook stepped down from his role as CEO and now serves as executive chairman, with John Ternus assuming the CEO position. The company has also faced challenges due to rising costs stemming from a memory shortage. Despite these hurdles, Apple has announced plans for new devices, including a foldable phone, new tablets, and an upgraded MacBook Pro. Meanwhile, the company is involved in ongoing litigation against OpenAI, accusing the AI company of trade theft, as Apple continues to compete in the hardware space amid the AI development race.
