Meta Unveils New VR Glasses with IMAX and 3D Support
Meta has announced a new pair of virtual reality glasses designed primarily for entertainment, featuring advanced display technology and immersive audio capabilities. The glasses incorporate Micro-OLED panels embedded in the lenses, delivering what Meta describes as a 5K Infinite Display with 37 pixels per degree, complemented by Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos support. This allows users to download and watch movies directly through the device.
IMAX Certification and Enhanced Viewing Experience
One of the most distinctive features of these glasses is their positioning as an ideal device for viewing IMAX-captured films. Meta claims that the glasses are the “first IMAX-enhanced certified VR device ever”, emphasizing their capability to showcase the expanded aspect ratio that characterizes IMAX’s high-resolution visual experience. This certification aims to provide users with an authentic IMAX viewing experience within a virtual environment.
3D Content and Collaboration with Disney
Supporting 3D content, the glasses allow users to experience movies that integrate their physical space into the viewing experience. Meta has partnered with Disney, and starting in November, Disney+ subscribers will be able to stream select movies — including certain Marvel titles — in 3D. The device promises to transform viewing environments into immersive worlds filled with dynamic effects, stunning 3D visuals, and spatial audio, essentially turning movies into VR gaming-like experiences.
Advanced Features and Voice Control Integration
The glasses will include Meta AI, the company’s virtual assistant, enabling voice-activated commands. Users will be able to perform various tasks simply by speaking, such as starting a movie. Additionally, the device supports hand gestures for command input, providing a hands-free and intuitive way to control content and settings.

The glasses are largely built for entertainment. Micro-OLED panels built into the lenses provide what Meta calls a 5K Infinite Display with 37 pixels per degree, along with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos audio support. Users will be able to download and watch movies.
Perhaps one of the more unique features of the glasses, however, is that Meta is pitching them as a great way to enjoy IMAX-captured films.

Indeed, the company calls the glasses the “first IMAX-enhanced certified VR device ever” and says they will be one of the few ways to experience the expanded aspect ratio that defines IMAX’s distinct high-resolution viewing experience.
The glasses also support 3D content, including movies that integrate a user’s physical space into their viewing experience. Meta says that it has teamed up with Disney and that in November, Disney+ users will be able to stream specific movies — including certain Marvel movies — in 3D.
Meta says that users will be able to watch specific movies and have their surroundings “transformed with immersive environments, dynamic effects, stunning 3D visuals, and spatial audio” — essentially converting the movie into a VR gaming-type experience.
The glasses will also come with Meta AI — its automated virtual assistant — built in, which means that users will be able to talk to the glasses and automate various tasks via voice command. For instance, Meta says you’ll be able to start a movie just by asking your glasses to do so. Other ways to issue commands include hand gestures.
