Meta Unveils Camera-Free AI Glasses at Connect 2026

Confirming earlier reports, Meta announced its first pair of camera-free AI glasses, named Ray-Ban Meta Audio, during its Connect 2026 conference on Wednesday. These new devices aim to address privacy concerns and negative perceptions associated with AI glasses, which have previously been criticized for potential misuse, including being labeled as “pervert glasses” by some. The glasses will be audio-only, allowing users to listen to music and podcasts, make calls, translate speech, and interact with Meta’s AI assistant, Muse.

Design, Features, and Pricing

Developed in partnership with EssilorLuxottica, Meta’s collaborator in its AI hardware initiatives, the Ray-Ban Meta Audio glasses will start at a price of $349. Unlike Meta’s existing range of smart glasses which feature cameras and come in various styles and colors, these audio-only models are more streamlined and lightweight, weighing just 43 grams. They feature adjustable temple tips, interchangeable nose pads, overextension hinges, and boast up to 12 hours of battery life on a single charge. When used with the included charging case, battery longevity extends to approximately 48 hours.

As they lack cameras, these glasses have a slimmer profile compared to Meta’s other models and are more discreet. They feature customizable temple tips, swappable nose pads, overextension hinges, and support up to 12 hours of active use on a single charge, with the option to extend to 48 hours using the included charging case. They are available in multiple color options, offering 23 different color and lens combinations, and come in two new styles: a retro-inspired “Clubmaster” design and the “Burbank,” characterized as a classic, timeless rectangular shape. Customers can also order prescription lenses if needed.

Availability and Additional Announcements

Meta announced that preorders for the Ray-Ban Meta Audio glasses will open on October 13. Alongside these glasses, the company revealed its next-generation AI glasses equipped with cameras, called Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 3). These models include the Ray-Ban Meta Wayfarer, as well as two new styles: the Aviator and Zena, the latter featuring a more distinctive cat-eye frame shape. These new glasses will include a 12 MP camera capable of recording 3K Ultra HD videos, a six-microphone array, and up to nine hours of battery life.

The original Ray-Ban Meta glasses, developed in partnership with EssilorLuxottica, will also expand in style and color options, including a new collaboration with singer Lisa. This comes after Meta’s previous partnership with Kylie Jenner. The glasses will be launched in additional countries globally, according to the company.

Future Features and Privacy Enhancements

All of Meta’s upcoming AI glasses will integrate access to its latest personal AI assistant, Muse. The company also teased several future updates, such as support for Dolby Atmos Capture, a feature that selects the best photo from multiple frames, options for landscape or portrait modes, hearing enhancements for users with hearing impairments, more detailed and context-aware responses, different audio modes, customizable controls, and a new privacy feature called “private processing,” which Meta claims will prevent the company from accessing user data during device operation.
