The implementation of voice functionality in Google’s AI Mode search tool
Google’s AI Mode Evolves into a Conversational Search Function
Google’s AI Mode is transitioning into a search function that allows users to interact through voice commands. The latest development introduced by the search giant is the Search Live voice feature for the AI search tool. This feature combines traditional Google Search with the experience of interacting with an AI chatbot. Initially showcased as Project Astra by the Google DeepMind team at Google I/O, the demo presented a scenario where a bike mechanic used the research prototype on his phone to retrieve specific information from a user manual. While the voice component is being launched today, Google has announced that live camera support will be added in the “coming months.”
Enhanced Search Experience with AI Mode
Google has emphasized that once the Search Live feature is activated, it operates in the background of the user’s phone. This allows individuals to continue conversing with the AI and conducting searches even while using other applications on their devices. While a similar voice mode called Gemini Live already exists in the Gemini app, the underlying voice capability of Gemini is now directly integrated into the Google search platform. Search Live with voice input is accessible through the Google mobile app for both Android and iOS users. However, individuals must be located in the U.S. and enrolled in the AI Mode experiment in Labs to access this feature.
At this year’s Google I/O, the company marked the official launch of a new search era with the public release of AI Mode. This transition has been in progress, starting with AI Overviews and expanding to include features like an AI-generated version of the People Also Ask (PAA) section. The introduction of AI Mode, which offers a chatbot interface within the search page, signifies a shift towards a more interactive and AI-powered search experience. This transformation is redirecting traffic away from external websites, impacting publishers.
With upcoming enhancements such as voice and camera support, Google aims to position AI Mode not just as a search tool but as an AI companion. Users can leverage this feature for various tasks, such as seeking advice on preventing clothes from wrinkling in a suitcase while on the go. Enrolled participants can test Search Live in the Google app by tapping on the new icon located beneath the search bar.
