India’s Wealthiest Man Expands Cloud PC Service to Broaden AI Accessibility
Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio has announced the expansion of its cloud-based PC service, JioPC, to include all internet users across India, enabling older computers to access AI-ready computing without hardware upgrades. The move aims to extend the lifecycle of existing devices and promote AI adoption in the country.
JioPC Opens to General Public with Stand-Alone Subscriptions
On Wednesday, Reliance Jio announced that JioPC, initially launched in July 2025 exclusively for its broadband subscribers, is now available as a standalone subscription service. This allows any user with an internet connection, regardless of their telecom provider, to stream a virtual PC from Jio’s cloud infrastructure. The service offers configurations with up to eight virtual CPUs, 16GB of RAM, and 1TB of storage, providing a flexible solution for a variety of computing needs.
Enabling Older Computers for Modern AI Applications
According to Jio, this service can empower computers as old as eight years to run contemporary AI applications effectively. The platform eliminates the necessity for hardware replacements or upgrades, making advanced computing accessible to a broader audience. Subscription plans start at ₹1,000 (approximately $11) for two months, while annual options cost ₹4,000 (around $42) for an 8GB RAM and 500GB storage setup, and ₹5,000 (about $53) for the 16GB RAM and 1TB storage configuration.
Market Context and Device Replacement Cycles in India
India had over 65 million PCs in use in 2025, including roughly 34 million consumer and 31 million commercial machines, according to estimates from IDC. The installed base is projected to grow to nearly 69 million by the end of 2026. Consumer and small business users typically replace their PCs every five to six years—an extension from four to five years in 2022—while enterprises are also prolonging device lifespans, with replacement cycles increasing from three to about four years, Bharath Shenoy, senior market analyst at IDC, explained to TechCrunch.
Cloud Computing as a Solution to Extend Device Lifespans
Reliance Jio aims to leverage cloud computing to further extend these device lifecycles. By shifting processing and storage functions into its data centers, the company can enhance computing capacity without requiring users to replace their existing hardware. This approach is part of Jio’s strategy to maintain technological relevance while reducing hardware dependency.
Potential Market Impact and Consumer Acceptance
Prabhu Ram, vice president of industry research at CyberMedia Research in Gurugram, suggests that JioPC may foster a new market where consumers pay for computing power rather than continually investing in hardware upgrades. “Jio is broadening its value proposition by opening JioPC to non-Jio users, challenging the traditional hardware upgrade cycle,” Ram told TechCrunch.
Limitations and Consumer Perception Challenges
However, Ram emphasizes that JioPC is unlikely to replace conventional PCs entirely. Instead, it could create a parallel, cost-sensitive tier for households, students, and others for whom purchasing a new AI-capable PC was previously out of reach. Indian consumers have traditionally preferred owning their devices over paying for a service, and convincing them to shift to a subscription model may require overcoming skepticism about internet dependence, especially in smaller cities and towns where reliable connectivity is less consistent. Disruptions to internet service can negatively impact user experience, unlike traditional standalone computers.
Competitive Landscape and Hardware Specifications
Refurbished PCs remain a low-cost alternative, allowing consumers to own inexpensive hardware without ongoing internet reliance. Additionally, Jio’s cloud-based AI PCs do not specify the inclusion of dedicated AI accelerators, which are a hallmark of newer AI-enabled hardware. The specifications provided by Jio do not mention such features, raising questions about the platform’s performance capabilities for on-device generative AI workloads.
Future Outlook and Market Adoption
Ultimately, the success of JioPC hinges on whether users perceive cloud computing as a routine utility rather than a temporary workaround. As Ram notes, the key challenge for Jio will be convincing consumers to prioritize paying for cloud-based services over traditional hardware purchases, especially as the company seeks to establish cloud computing as an integral part of India’s digital infrastructure.
