Google drops some hot new features for the Pixel 10 series, including live translation for phone calls and tons of AI goodies
The Google Pixel 10 series has been officially released, and it comes as no surprise that the new phones are packed with numerous AI features. The event took a unique approach by bringing on several celebrities to showcase how AI features on Pixel devices can be used in everyday life. Rick Osterloh, senior VP of devices and services, described the offerings as “personal intelligence,” highlighting how Google’s AI features cater to individual lives. An “agentic universal AI assistant” is also in the works, promising more proactive features later this year.
Voice Translate Feature
One of the exciting demos featured the new Voice Translate feature on the Google Pixel 10, which translates conversations in real-time. This feature is freely available on Pixel 10 phones, thanks to AI models powered by the Tensor G5 chip. Translations are processed on device, ensuring privacy.
Magic Cue
Magic Cue is an AI assistant that proactively finds relevant information across apps like Gmail, Calendar, Screenshots, and Messages. It suggests relevant information based on your activities, such as dinner reservations, flight info, and more. Users can control which apps Magic Cue has access to or turn it off if they find the suggestions invasive.
AI Features for the Google Pixel 10 Camera
Google introduced new AI features for the Pixel 10 series camera, allowing users to outsource creativity to their phones. Users can ask Gemini for photo editing help or use Camera Coach for guidance on taking the perfect shot. Camera Coach provides step-by-step instructions on different shot options, helping users develop their personal photography style.
Pixel Journal
Pixel Journal is a journaling app with an AI boost that provides writing prompts to help users process their thoughts. The app offers insights into patterns and progress over time, making it easier to share thoughts with the help of AI.
We can imagine how this could be helpful for people trying to get started with journaling, but it also seems a little dystopian to have AI do it on your behalf. Isn’t the point of journaling about learning to articulate your feelings? It’s unclear exactly how involved Google’s AI gets in your journaling practice, so we’re definitely keeping an eye on this one.
Ask AI to take a Message
Google has continued to build on call screening features for the Pixel, and now that comes with asking AI to take a message. The feature, aptly named Take a Message, will transcribe any voicemails from missed calls and provide any next steps from the message.
Google AI Pro subscription
If you buy a Pixel 10 Pro, Pro XL, or 10 Pro Fold, Google will give you a full year of its AI subscription, Google AI Pro. Google’s lower tier subscription normally costs $20 a month and gets you more premium access to Google’s various AI tools. This includes access to more advanced Gemini models, Google’s AI filmmaking tool Flow, its podcast-style teaching tool Notebook LM, Gemini Gmail, Docs, other Google apps, and more.
