United Airlines passengers faced significant delays on Wednesday due to a technology issue that grounded flights for several hours. The problem, which started at 5:12 p.m. CT / 6:12 p.m. ET / 3:12 p.m. PT, affected flights in various locations such as San Francisco, Chicago, Denver, Newark, and Houston, leading to over 1,000 United flights being delayed according to FlightAware.

Passengers experienced extended waits on runways, delays in baggage claim, and limited flight availability for future dates. United’s X team responded to social media posts from affected passengers to address the situation.

United confirmed the technology issue had been resolved and stated that while some delays were expected to persist, efforts were being made to restore normal operations. The outage was attributed to a system error related to Unimatic, a system housing flight information that is linked to various operational systems within the airline.

The Federal Aviation Administration collaborated with United to address the issue, offering support to alleviate flight backlogs. Passengers affected by the delays were advised to contact United via direct message on social media, use the chatbot on the airline’s website, call an agent, or text “UNITED” for customer service assistance.
